“30m spent on asylum children
Health authorities have spent almost €30 million over the past five years on the care of asylum-seeking children in facilities where at least one child is disappearing every week, it has emerged.
FG’s immigration spokesman Denis Naughten said yesterday it was a national scandal that taxpayers were footing the bill for hostels which were little more than “grooming grounds” for those seeking to prey on vulnerable children.
“For the first six months of this year the HSE has paid out close to €3 million for hostel accommodation for immigrant children . . . ,” he said.”
The above article appeared in the Irish Times yesterday. It states quite clearly states that 1 child a week goes missing in state run facilities.
Why is this not a national scandal? Why are the shows of Joe Duffy & Gerry Ryan not overrun by concernced citizens eager to criticise this disgraceful situation? Why doesn’t anyone care?
Is it because we’re just too busy giving out about NAMA or does it have something to do with the fact that it is children seeking asylum who are going missing and not Irish children? An uncomfortable thought, isn’t it? To think that our land of welcoming green fields would turn a blind eye to the plight of 100’s of defenceless children just because they’re not Irish. Are we really that racist as a country?
Well I would venture to say yes, given that the front pages of our national newspapers prefer to talk about an English celebrities bankruptcy or an American Senators death instead of searching for and putting an end to this horrendous situation where young, vulernable children are being taken advantage of, used and abused.
Where is our outrage? Where is our compassion? Where is our humanity?
