Five girls have died in a stampede at a government school in East Delhi. The stampede took place after parts of the school were flooded due to heavy rain overnight.
Thirty-one children were injured and 10 of them are said to be in critical condition. Four children are in ICU. The injured children have been taken to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital, where Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit is visiting them.
According to reports, the children panicked on rumours of an electric current in the water flooding classrooms and this led to the stampede. The classrooms were flooded following continuous rain overnight.
Sheila Dikshit said at the hospital that the rumour about current in the water had been a false one. She said the school was not full as only students of Class seven, eight and 10 had come in for examinations.
